WoBirdy season

Despite the slow start to my WoBirdy experience, I had a feeling that once the weather changed {and all my flower seedheads disappeared}, we’d start seeing more action. I was right.

Once the house finches discovered the feeder, they’ve been regular visitors. Often as a date, sometimes in a group. The females get all the way in the feeding tray, which is adorable.

This guy was startled by another incoming finch, and I love this shot!

They’ve got competition though: the cardinal! This guy is hilarious: he either hears the camera/sensor or can see his reflection, and I have much footage of him pecking the camera. He has also started coming for an early breakfast, which results in very cool night-vision images.

His lady even came by one day, crashing a house finch date.

Some of our tiny bird friends are starting to get braver now, especially on the colder days.

I was so excited when the bluebird finally made it down to the feeding perch! He’s been hanging out on the roof, apparently it’s a nice sunning spot. Hopefully he’ll be back and I can get better pictures – he is such a handsome fella.

Surprisingly, the mockingbird has yet to discover the feeder: last year he was the self-appointed guardian of the suet feeder we had hanging, and would chase away any bird that got too close. It’s still early, with a lot of cold weather left, so things are likely to change. I’m just so happy more birds are finding the feeder and I love when my phone pings with alerts of “Birds detected”!

  1. This is so cool and I have been so tempted to get one for my parents… but my dad HATES technology so I wonder if he’d get frustrated? He loves feeding birds, though. And these up-close-and-personal shots are so cool!

    • After the initial set-up, I find the tech/app pretty easy to use. The hardest part is waiting for it to “establish a secure connection” when I want to tap into the live-feed, haha. The camera and resulting photos and video are so so good though.

  2. It sounds like youre having a great time with this and that the birds are loving the treats too. That close up of the cardinal checking out the camera is fantastic. I cant wait to see more and hope a mockingbird appearance will occur.

I’d love the chance to see what birds appeared if I had one of these – mostly pigeons I imagine – but I’d be worried about discovering something I dont want to with a tail 🙈

    • The cardinal makes me laugh daily, lol
I am really surprised the mockingbirds haven’t found it yet, they’re usually pretty on top of food!

So far I haven’t had anything with a tail, thankfully! But I do get “motion” alerts in the dark, and best I can tell it’s a very very large spider walking by the camera. 😮

      • He definitely looks entertaining. Maybe they have some other source atm that’s distracted them 🤔

That’s a relief. I’m going to hope that the spider is actually average and distorted by how close it is to the lens 😂 thank goodness I won’t have to physically find out. I’m better with spiders than I used to be but I still don’t like spotting big ones 😅
