Book squares: complete

The year+ project that is the book cover square blanket is nearly complete. All of the individual book cover squares have been made, the math has been mathed to make it a decent sized blanket, and the final borders are being added before I start the process of putting it all together. I will definitely share the finished product, but in the meantime, here’s a teaser of squares made in the final quarter of 2025.

This was such a fun way to record my reading, that I’m repeating the project in 2026! Sort of. Instead of making squares to match the cover of each book, I am going to assign a different color to every month. When I finish reading a book, I’ll crochet a rectangle in the color of the month, and at the end of the year they’ll be randomly selected during the joining process. The hope, if I can manage to pull this off, is to have something resembling a bookshelf. I haven’t seen anything like this before, and I’m completely making it up as I go, but … I feel optimistic. The vision is in my head, and that’s at least half the battle!

In the meantime, I’ve got a little bit more work on this one, but I’m starting to get very excited about the final product. I will have to make a few solid turquoise squares as “spacers” to get a workable number of squares {82 does not a normal blanket make}. It’s hard to tell what the size will be, so chances are good a nice border will be added as well. But the end is so close, y’all! I cannot wait to share the finished blanket soon.

Are you doing anything crafty or creative to track your reading in 2026?
Or maybe you’ve got a more general idea for a fun crafty project this year?

  1. I know I’ve said it before-and I’ll probably say it again- but I think this is one of the most original reading projects I’ve ever heard of before and I think this should go viral. I can’t crochet or knit so I will NOT be copying you, but I love this idea so much. Like… SO MUCH. I think it is absolutely genius.

    • Thank you ❤ ❤ ❤ I cannot wait to see how it all looks joined together – and how my abstract vision for 2026 turns out too, haha … It has been a really fun way to record reading + get me comfortable with the crochet hooks again. And any reason to buy yarn is a good thing in my book 😉 LOL!

  2. These are beautiful again and I really cant wait to see the finished result. The pumpkin spice one is just perfect colour wise 😍 and it feels fitting in a way that so many Austen titles will have a square within your first book blanket. Good luck finishing it off. And I reallt look forward to seeing how your 2026 project goes.

    • The Pumpkin Spice colors really are so good in person – it’s hard to tell in the picture, but the creamy white has a thread of gold running through it as well 😍 So good! 😀 I do love how many Austen and Austenesque titles are represented; feels very appropriate 🙂

  3. This is amazing!!! I am so impressed. This year, I’m making a book sweater by embroidering patches on from books I loved. I should make a post with an update! I have been showing it on my Instagram. I’ve got about 8 on there. I have never done it before and just learning as I go. It’s not the best looking, but has been so fun!

    • Thank you! It’s been a lot of fun and a great way to get more comfortable with crochet. The book sweater sounds so awesome too, you should totally post about it 😍 (and now I’m gonna go snoop Instagram, haha). I love these projects where you’re learning as you go and building confidence and skill and creativity 🙂

      • Yeah, I figured if I kept trying to “learn” I would just get frustrated and never do it. Sooo I just jumped in. haha! I can’t wait to see my progress at the end of the year. 🙂

  4. Oh my copy of Pride and Prejudice is of the same edition than your Persuasion! Sad news I didn’t end up reading P&P last year, I’m so bummed out at myself lol.
But oh my, wow I love how this project turned out, if I had more yarn colours I’d be tempted to give it a try myself. I can’t even decide which one looks the prettiest they’re all so nice! I can’t wait to see what it’s like when it’s all put together! I also love your idea for this year’s blanket, super creative and a different way of tracking books with yarn 😀

    • Yay for edition twins! 😀 There’s so many gorgeous ones out there, you never know which one is going to pop up, haha
Oh thank you! I was so annoyed when I first started this because I’d just busted all my stash on my “relearning” afghan … but buying yarn was fun too 😉 LOL! Now I’ve got a great new stash, and should be able to pull 12 colors from it for this year’s experiment 🙂 If not, I know how to wait for Hobby Lobby to put it on sale 😉

      • That’s so true, especially for Austen, I wouldn’t even want to count how many editions exist!
aha I guess buying yarn is a perk of doing a project like this so I’m glad it’s not all bad 😛 !
