Bee season is almost here!

After a weirdly cold and wet January {no snow at all, sadly}, February was weirdly warmer. Yes, there were cold nights and a few raw days, but on the whole it was warmer. With the warmer days, and the growing daylight, the world feels like it’s waking up early – ready to take on a new spring. And as the world wakes up, so do the bees.

Over the weekend we did our routine golfcart ride-by to see how the girls are handling winter, and oh what a sight we saw! These little bees were busy!

There was so much coming and going, as they gathered much-needed pollen, you could hear the happy humming buzz. Pollen is the bees’ source of protein, and a key ingredient for feeding bee larvae, so we are very happy they’re bringing so much back to the hive. And aren’t their packed pollen pouches {say that five times fast, ha} so cute?

All this bee activity tells us it’s time to get swarm traps ready! We’ll be doing that very soon, weather permitting, and we’ve got some new ideas to try this year, so check back for more details.

If you’re a new reader, catch up on our beekeeping journey here. It’s been a lot of fun, and such a huge learning experience. Things will be picking up soon, with the return of warmer weather, and I am super excited to open up the hives and see how our girls made it through the winter!
