Garden updates

These tomatoes are moving to the garden very soon!

Spring is whizzing past {has someone told the weather it’s only April? No reason to be hitting 80* yet!}, and things in the garden are picking up speed too. Our seedling-plantlings are nearly ready to be moved outside {the tomatoes and peppers have been taking “field trips” outside every day to harden them off before they’re planted}, which means we needed to get the grow bags ready. After a winter of neglect {oops}, that turned into an all-day job!

Once we got things weeded and generally tidied up, we spread leaf matter on as many grow bags as we could, and scattered red clover seeds in all the bags. Last year we noticed that the grow bags with plants and red clover growing together did better than bags with just plants. We are continuing and expanding that experiment this year.

Peas are the cutest things when they start to emerge.

We’re in a bit of a waiting period right now, but it’s a good waiting: everything is growing. Every day there’s new growth to notice – carrot tops feathering, lettuces randomly deciding to sprout months later, peas and green beans stretching taller. We’ve even got some early peas appearing! These are a dwarf French variety, that will plump up to be cooked. My sugar snaps are still growing, but will hopefully start blooming soon. {We had a volunteer come up from where we used last year’s vines as mulch, and that one is already blooming. Go figure}.

Once we get the tomatoes and other plantlings set out, things will really start growing with gusto. Which means a lot more watering duties for the Farm Wife!

How is your spring garden progressing? Have you got everything out yet, or still nurturing young plants inside/in the greenhouse?
