Summer reading season is here

Maybe it’s all the years I spent in the Library, but Summer Reading is A Big Deal in my world. Thinking back, I’ve always had a soft spot for the books of summer. I can remember staying up way too late at night reading, after spending all day in the pool, visiting family in Florida. Reading in the hammock in the late afternoons, once it was finally in the shade, with a cold drink. And when I took myself on a week-long retreat in the mountains (five?) years ago, I took an entire stack of books to read on the cabin’s porch. There’s simply a little extra magic to the reading in summer.

Some books have the flavor and spark of magic that give you the summer feels even if you pick them up in the middle of winter. These are my absolute favorite books to pick up during summer – to really compound the reading magic. And some authors demand to be read in the summer; I’ve frequently said that it doesn’t feel like Summer without a Sarah Dessen novel – and I plan to reread at least one this year.

If you’re not sure what to pick up this summer, here are the books on my Summer Reading radar. I’ve got a mix of new releases I’m keeping my eye on, and a handful of backlist titles I hope to finally get around to. And if that’s not enough, a selection of summery reads I’ve enjoyed over the last few years. Hopefully there’s a little something for everyone!

What’s your favorite kind of book to read during the summer? And what’s on your summer reading radar? Are there any upcoming releases I’ve missed you think I should be looking for?

  1. I love the idea of your Jane Austen summer reading theme in a previous post on your blog. Thanks for the inspiration to do a theme! I am going to try to catch up on some Regency books from various authors I’ve been wanting to read for my summer theme. Thanks again for the suggestion. I enjoy your posts. 🙂

    • Oh yay! ❤ I think themes can be a lot of fun, especially when there's wiggle room 🙂 Can't wait to hear what new Regency stories you read – it's hard to beat those 🙂

  2. I agree that Sarah Dessen books tend to fit perfectly for summer reads. I love what ive read by her but need to catch up on her backlist. And I have quite a few of the books listed here on my TBR. I also love picking up Greek mythology books during the summer. I guess because of the warm climate they’re set within 😂

    • Huzzah for overlapping TBRs and fellow Sarah Dessen Summer Readers 😀 I’ve got several Greek mythology books on my TBR – at least one attempted in the colder months and it just wasn’t vibing for me. Maybe I need to try them this summer, while it’s sweltering hot! 😂
