Glimpses of September

Y’all. What in the world? It feels almost strange to be posting this – considering the utter and complete devastation in the mountains. We were actually supposed to be there currently, for our anniversary, but Helene … Watching the footage coming out of the area is absolutely heartbreaking. Places I’ve visited and known and loved my whole life are just … gone. And it’s not just my beloved North Carolina mountains hurting, it’s so much of the eastern seaboard. It’s the Panhandle of Florida {my family is safe!}, and all sorts of inland places that don’t usually see a hurricane. Helene was so large, 30 states were under her cloud cover.

In the face of all this … perhaps the glimmers and glimpses of JOY and BEAUTY are exactly what we all need. And so, a handful of images from September.

Savoring the last of the roses.
Also savoring the zinnias as long as they last.
I scored some quality cuddle time with my sweet old man, River.

The baby cows decided we would have a multi-day game of “keep-away-slash-tag,” where they would slip out of the pasture and wander the yard to graze. They let me get within a couple feet of them, looking oh-so-innocent and cute, before they’d turn around and go back.

There is nothing like Autumn sunsets, and I am savoring every one that comes.

The most perfect nadapeno.
Tomatoes may have been iffy this year, but the peppers are grand.
Reloaded my flower press, and am loving the way the greens turned out.
Hello, glorious full moon.
This little lizard and I both got wet, scurrying around to do some last minute storm prep.
The day after a hurricane …
My motto at the moment: Coffee, books, and Courage, Dear Heart

We took advantage of the break in temperature and a spare moment, to open one of the beehives! {This is the one that’s easiest to open, the others will require a much more involved process}. They’re busy little bees, gathering pollen like mad things – which is a good thing. It does appear they had to eat a lot more of their honey reserves over the summer than expected, but we’ll take a closer look when we get to “winterizing.” In the meantime, it was so good to hear that buzzing and see what the girls are up to!

Right now, we have to hold on to every glimmer, glimpse, and promise of love, joy, beauty, peace, and hope … May we all find them, daily. I pray you’re all safe.

  1. Your photos are lovely. I’m so glad to hear that your farm, family and bees are OK. I have been seeing the reports of storm damage from Helene. It is truly heartbreaking and my prayers are with all who are suffering. It certainly was a widespread storm, even reaching into southern OH with some tornado activity.

  2. I heard a bit about the storm on the news but didn’t realise it was so massive. I’ll have to look at some articles about it properly. It sounds devastating and I’m so sorry to hear that places you’ve always loved are gone. Your pictures are lovely though, the colours of those zinnias are stunning 😍 and your cats so cute. I think I want to try flower pressing one day too 🤔 ill have to look into it properly but I like the idea. I hope you have a lovely October and hope you stay safe given the weather.

    • It hasn’t been covered a lot in mainstream media, but social media and local news outlets have a lot of pictures and stories {as they’re able to get service to post updates}. It’s one of those things that gets more horrifying/devastating as more becomes known – but as a state, and a region, the people are really rallying together to support each other. A testament of the better side of humanity ❤
Thank you, and I do miss my kitty snuggles – he stayed with my parents when I got married, and once I was in a cat-free home I realized I'm actually allergic to them… Good times. I still snuggle him though, I just take allergy meds first, LOL
I'm just getting into the flower pressing and it's been a fun experiment. Now to figure out what to do with the flowers! 🤔

      • I did manage to find a bit about it on BBC News but I’ll try searching & seeing if I can find anything from somewhere local to the area. No idea if I can from here though. What I saw was awful though, one person even said the water was neck high where they were. I’m glad you’re safe. And that’s true about how people come together in disasters. It’s lovely to see, just awful that such devastation is whats caused it.

Oh I’m so sorry to hear that. I don’t blame you for not giving up on cuddles completely, I wouldn’t have either. At least you still get occasional ones ❤️

I guess you could put them on cards or make a scrapbook. I’m sure Google has some suggestions though 😂

          • Thanks for the links, they do work and it’s awful to see the devastation involved. I’ll have to check the Facebook page out too. I’m so sorry, it’s awful to think about. I’ve seen before & after pictures for other natural disasters before & it’s chilling to see, let alone when you know the places involved.

Hopefully some of them will appeal to you.
