Glimpses of February

I know that February is only 2 days shorter than most months, but for reasons unknown it feels more like a whole week shorter. Those 28 days absolutely flew by, and I’m not sure how to account for them! It has been a month of wildly changeable weather, but by now the overall consensus among the growing things is “let’s grow!” Blooms are appearing, the days are stretching, and the robins are back. {Tangent: I am disappointed anew every year that American robins are not nearly as cute as those in the UK. Same for badgers.}

In the whirlwind that was the shortest month, I still managed to savor moments of beauty and joy.

The month started with an amazing sky view: a crescent moon and Venus! I had to play with my settings to get the inset shot that showed the moon and not its glow, but it turned out so neat.
Always love when the camellias start blooming …
… so do the bees! Early sources of pollen and nectar are hard to find.
Scored some cuddle time with this giant sweetie.
These violas are giving me so much joy. A successful experiment for sure!
The Johnny jump-ups in my “window boxes” are the real stars of winter:
they’ve taken all the cold and snow and are still blooming like champs!
Every now and then, the winter sky will put on a sunset show.

Our Valentine’s tradition is takeout pizza and fancy bakery cookies at home. This year, I decided to make our Valentine’s dinner. With the assistance of Preppy Kitchen’s super easy pizza dough recipe, and Lisa’s recipe for butterscotch brownies, I think it was a success. It’s always fun to bring out the pretty plates {all thrifted!} and we need to normalize eating by candlelight.

When the daffodils start blooming, Spring is on the way!

Did your February fly by too? Hopefully everyone is staying warm and cozy, enjoying the longer days while still savoring the quiet of winter’s waiting. Are your earliest bloomers starting to appear?

  1. Our February was so ridiculously cold that it made the month seem very, very long! Like it would never end.

Great photos all around. The moon one is fantastic.

I had no idea that British badgers and robins looked different than American ones. huh. You learn something new everyday.

    • Thank you! I was happy when I managed to finally get the actual crescent 😀

Oh yeah, those British critters are so dang cute! It was quite a devastating day when I realized how different ours are 😂

Hopefully March will be a more temperate month for y’all! ❤

  2. February sure was a moody weather month but it did seem to fly by! I love all your flower pics. I have tulips and daffodils coming up. Nothing even close to being in bloom yet. The robins are busy in the yard and I have three pair of Eastern Bluebirds vying for my one nest box 🙂

    • I love bluebirds! We should probably put out a nesting box or few – we are at least close to woods, so the birdies have lots of options 🙂

      Here’s to blooms soon! 🌷🌷🌷

      • Oh you should! I used to live on five wooded acres with a creek and I had several nest boxes. The bluebirds ate their weight in mosquitos and beetles. Living in town, I put up up a nest box hoping to at least get a wren or two and was thrilled when, a week later, I had bluebirds! This is my fourth year with the nest box here and I average two to three clutches in a season. It’s so wonderfully rewarding to know I had a small part in giving these beautiful babes their start in life 🙂

        • I have a pair of wrens that visit the carport every morning {and some afternoons, especially once it’s warmer}, checking my flower pots and the Adirondack chairs for spiders 😂 I may have to put out many boxes to accommodate the bird village 🙂

  3. Oh, enjoy Daffodil season, they’re so pretty but it’s so short! & I love all of these pictures but the one of the bee eating and the flowers peaking through the snow are my favs! Your valentine’s tradition is adorable and those plates are gorgeous!

    • It is a short season! I think I’m going to cut a few and bring them inside, especially with a couple mid20s overnights coming up …

We were very happy to see the little bee having a flower snack ❤ And yes, I am in love with vintage rose china, and was like “I am bringing it out and we are going to use it!” 😀

      • Oh, that’s a great idea, definitely need to save them from the cold! Aw I love looking at bees too, it’s always so interesting and they are so cute. Yes, I love that, what’s the purpose of having lovely things if you’re not gonna use them right?!

  4. I can’t get over the flowers blooming where you are. So jealous! We don’t have anything starting yet….just starting to poke through the ground. I love your Valentine’s Day dinner set up. Gorgeous!

    • I will admit: some of them are growing under a greenhouse-plastic tent, to help them along 😉 lol … But flower season is slowly creeping back, and I am here for it ❤

  5. Lovely pictures as always 🥰 I saw Venus a few times this month too. Plus possibly Mars. I believe it was due to the red glow but I’m not 100% sure as my stargazing knowledge is pretty non existent 🙈 which is why I have no clue if I actually saw any of the other planets despite them all apparently being on view 😂

Kitty cuddles are always wonderful 🥰 you have so many lovely flower and sky photos too. I’m glad your homemade Valentines went well. The recipes sound lovely and the decor is beautiful.

February flew by for me too. And spring flowers are definitely starting to appear. I also never knew that your badgers and Robins differed from ours. I have to agree that we have the cuter variety though (your badgers do look fairly sweet until you spot a photo baring their teeth 😂)

    • Huzzah for getting to see Venus! ✨ You likely did see Mars too, and honestly I wouldn’t have been able to pick out the other planets without this really cool app, because they really just look like extra twinkly stars 😂

Thank you 🥰🥰 I’m glad the spring flowers are appearing for you as well 🙂 They’re so lovely and hope-giving when they start popping up and showing off. Valid point on our badgers not being so bad (until the teeth), lol … if you want to see something with a truly horrifying set of teeth, look up our wolverines 😂😂 Thankfully those live nowhere near me!

      • I saw Venus quite a bit lately tbh, it’s been hard to miss given how bright it’s been. Ooh I’m glad you found an app to help you 🥰 from what you’ve said I may have seen a few of the others too. A couple did seem to be twinkling more than I’d expected so perhaps those were planets too.

Very true. They really do tend to give you a mood boast, especially when they’re joined by blue skies. Oh wow those look like they could have inspire werewolf legends in some pictures 😂 I’m glad you don’t have to worry about them. I could be wrong but the most dangerous thing I can think of that lives wild in the UK is wild boars although that’s only in certain areas (like the Forest Of Dean which I visited once and was half worried about finding them, half disappointed not to spot any 🙈). I’ve also seen rumours of panthers that people have had as pets and let loose but I sincerely hope those stories are false.

        • Venus has been showing off for sure 🙂

Wild boars are definitely things to be wary of! You hear stories about people (and dogs) having bad run-ins with them here in the US as well … thankfully not near me. We do have a fair bit of wildlife though, most of which is cute 😉 lol … We’ve had a lot of random sightings lately, I think I’m going to do a post about it all, along with the subsequent research I do after seeing the various critters 😂

          • Yeah it’s definitely for the best that I didn’t see any really. I was just semi curious to see one too 🙈 I actually looked them up afterwards and apparently they’re in more of the country than I realised. Although it’s only ever in the forest of Dean that I’ve seen warnings for them. Aww well I’m glad most of it is cute 🥰 ooh I can’t wait to see that. It sounds like such a fun idea ❤️ I love hearing about animals.
