The growing garden

As the days are getting longer, things are starting to get busier around the garden. A few weeks after starting our tomatoes and planting potatoes, the time came to get the rest of our Spring/Summer garden seeds going. With only a few seeds to start, it almost felt like we were forgetting something, until we stepped back and took in the whole of our early garden endeavors.

I am so excited about what we are growing, and cannot wait for the season to kick into full gear and that first garden feast … Here’s a look at the garden’s growth so far.

Our favorite squash, and two kinds of pickling cucumbers!
Starting these in containers, since they will outgrow soil blocks before planting time.
Marvel of Venice green beans.
I love the gorgeous dark blue they turn after soaking overnight.
Hardening off cabbages and broccoli before planting.
We’ve got tomato plantlings!

While it is sometimes hard to wait for seeds to germinate and things to start growing {the potatoes are still doing their thing underground and haven’t sprouted out yet}, I love looking at the pictures and seeing how much growth is happening. The lettuce and peas are growing at a rate you can notice daily, and the baby tomatoes are starting to get their grown-up leaves. All of sudden, they will all look like “real plants” and we’ll be waiting for those first blooms to appear.

Spring … what a glorious season of Hope and Promise!

Have you started any gardening yet?

  1. You are off to a great start, Rebecca! I can’t wait to do my yearly batch of sun pickles! I don’t have space for cucumbers but thankfully literally everyone I know grows them and are always happy to share 🙂

    • I have not made pickles before, but a good friend has an amazing refrigerator pickle recipe. Mr and I have considered finding/testing a good recipe for shelf-stable/canned pickles, but usually end up prioritizing canning tomatoes (and making jam last year!) 🙂

  2. Ooh I wondered what those beans were when I saw your Instagram pictures. It’s always lovely to hear that the lettuce is going so well, here’s hoping it’s a sign of things to come. As to your question kind of? I haven’t planted anything yet but have tidied up a bit outside. This year I’m really going to have to take note of the best time to plant things 😂

    • You look at those beans, and you’d never guess they turn into these lovely flat light-colored green beans! 😀 And they’re so very delicious as well. Very excited about the lettuce, and we’re going to try and see if we can get head lettuce to grow as well. 🤞 Tidying things up is the first step to being able to plant! 😉 I hope you’re able to get some things growing this year!
