If you’ve been around a little while, you know that A: I love flowers and B: I love growing zinnias. When I left my job at the Library, we talked about things I could do with my newfound “free time.” One of the ideas that came up frequently was flower farming – Mr.’s cousin {whose daughter hatched our chicks} is a flower farmer, and has been an invaluable resource as I’ve picked her brain. Turns out, growing flowers to sell as cut flowers is a bit different from “just growing flowers,” ha.
After some discussion, we took the plunge and ordered a load of dirt and more grow bags. You may have seen the dirt in pictures from last Fall, and wondered what we were up to … Now you know!
We added a row of flower grow bags behind the garden rows, as well as building a few low raised beds. I’ll use the raised beds for things that grow too tall for the grow bags.
I grew some “test” zinnias in the late Summer/early Fall, to get an idea of how the more specialized varieties grow, and make sure the grow bags will work.
I also sowed the viola seeds, and babied them along all winter – learning much along the way – and after enjoying their blooms for months, I’ve been able to sell some. These have been so fun {and gorgeous} to grow, I’m already making plans to increase the number and variety for next year.
My summer zinnias have been sowed, and are sprouting and growing. I’ve got 5 special varieties, in a beautiful color palette, and cannot wait to see them in bloom. I also had to buy another bulk bag of mixed zinnias and tossed them in the big “round” bed at the front porch – my very first flower sales happened last summer with those mixed zinnias, plus I love the riot of color.
The fact I can grow things that I love, and earn a little in the process, has been such a delight. I am constantly looking at the available flower seeds and dreaming of “one day” … There are so many gorgeous options, it would be entirely too easy to buy everything, ha. I’ve also been doing research and learning by way of books and YouTube. I feel certain there will be more posts to come, as I learn more – and grow more: y’all know I’ve got to share all the flower photographs!

It’s awesome to earn from what you love. I also want to try booktube but haven’t had guts nor the time for editing so far but I hope to change that once my kid stops depending on me so much.

Oooh, yes. YouTube is such a tantalizing place, but the edits – and having faces on screen … But I may have to put my chickens on there, lol … Joining BookTube is a great goal 🙂

This is amazing! I grew zinnias a few years ago and absolutely loved this. This is a great reminder to plant some this summer. If we were neighbors, I would be your best customer. Your flowers are gorgeous! Do you sell them at farmers markets? I look forward to following along on your journey.

Zinnias are the best! They’re so happy and easy to grow, haha… Definitely get you some seeds! I wish I could provide flowers for everyone 🩷 I have sold most of them direct to florists or through Mr’s cousin 🙂 I’m not quite big enough for farmers markets, but I’ve been dreaming of “one day” options – maybe a pop-up bouquet stand!

Aren't they the cutest?! Officially they're the cousins' cows, but I've made it my mission to befriend them {with some success!}, haha. I never knew I liked cows until we got married and had cow neighbors 🙂

I love dahlias, roses and sunflowers. Honestly I could list multiple more though 😂 I’m attempting to grow corn flowers, again as my first lot didn’t grow, this year purely because they looked pretty 😅
