Flock on the move

So much has changed since the first chicken content landed on this blog! After spending a month outside under the carport, our little flock is now “free ranging” on grass within the safe confines of a large solar-electric fence, and they’ve grown so much. Moving them outside definitely made getting regular update pictures more difficult – as they got bigger and stronger, it got harder to hold them with one hand for photographing, and I didn’t want them to get away from me. It’s amazing how fast they can grow and change in such a short amount of time.

Move Number 1: Outside under the carport, early May

Pecan, approx 4 weeks old
Penguin, approx 4 weeks old
Pepper, approx 4 weeks old
Pippin, approx 2 1/2 weeks old
Popcorn, approx 2 1/2 weeks old

Move Number 2: Onto the Grass, Early June

Pecan, approx 10 weeks old
Penguin, approx 10 weeks old
Pepper, approx 10 weeks old
Pippin, approx 8 weeks old
Popcorn, approx 8 weeks old

You can definitely see how much they grew from when we first moved them outside in early May to this week. I continue to be amazed by the feather progression – Pecan and Pepper have changed so much, and Pippin! Her colors completely flip-flopped from her baby fluff! Penguin is the only one with grown up feathers that match the fluff, and she’s developing a textbook Araucana beard.

Popcorn is going to be one gorgeous rockstar of a rooster, with the most amazing green and purple sheen appearing in his black. There’s even some copper starting to come in, and the wild hairdo is new within the last week or two as well, so there’s no telling what his final *look* will be.

Speaking of roosters … My hunch is holding true: Popcorn is definitely a rooster {I’m 99% sure at this point}. But what do we think of Pecan? From the beginning, Pecan has behaved like the other hens in terms of walking and carriage – the only “difference” was the level of bossy. But hey, if I was that tiny, I’d be bossy too! I can’t even really judge from the comb + wattles, because some breeds of hen do have large red ones. But the tail feathers … that tail is pure rooster.

Note: I have heard my first rooster crow, but all the chickens were inside their box and I have no idea who did it! Again though, some hens can crow!?

We should find out for sure in another few months when egg-laying time happens, but until then, cast your vote: Is Pecan a Hen or a Rooster?

The Flock! {Minus Pepper, somewhere in back}.
Also: look how tiny Pecan is next to Popcorn!
I can’t get over Pepper’s feathers. And she is the most demure, quiet little thing.
Pippin is just a fluffball … she’s going to be a BIG fluffy girl.

If this isn’t enough chicken content, you can also find them showing off over on our YouTube channel’s shorts page. I anticipate more videos as they continue to adjust to their new home and start strutting their personality.

  1. Omg those pictures are so sweet. Penguin at four weeks old 😍 and I love how Popcorn is standing in their first picture. Love the hairdo too 😂 I love the variation in Peppers feathers too. As to your question I truly don’t know what to say Pecan is. I know nothing on the subject tbh so it would be a total guess. Maybe they’re a rooster though given how they’re standing. Although when you see them altogether I don’t know. Could a rooster be that small compared to the hens 🤔 as I said my knowledge is non existant 😂

    • Penguin has been so cute all along, and now she’s got this slightly disheveled/fluff look, and is a little bit spacy, lol… but she’s sweet, so very sweet. ❤ Popcorn knows how to pose for the camera, and I wish he could still stand in my hand but he's way way too big now 😂
Pecan could be a rooster that tiny, because s/he is apparently a Dutch Bantam {the cousin confirmed, her Bantam rooster is one + they've got a hen}, which only gets about 1 pound when fully grown.
Compare that to Pippin, who could easily be 8-10 pounds, if my best guessing on breed is correct.
The Flock is an adorable mish-mash of sizes but they all have huge personality coming in 😀

      • Aww that’s sounds adorable and like it could lead to some humorous antics too. It’s lovely when you get an animal that knows how to pose well 😂

Ah right, that sounds like a major size difference then and I guess you’ll just have to wait and see. I look forward to finding out though.

        Yay that’s lovely 🥰

    • I am particularly fond of Penguin – she’s so sweet, and has such fluffy cheeks, but she’s so ditzy/not the brightest, lol … She’s started following me around when I’m coming and going in the fence. They actually all will come running to the fence when I walk by the outside of it ❤ Pecan is sassy 😂 I had to give her (him?) belly rubs this morning, LOL
