After a very dry June and July, August is making up for lost rainfall. It has rained more days than not, and we have already had more than 7 inches! The heat has also broken, and we’ve even dug out the sweatshirts as several rainy days never made it out of the 60s. I feel certain we will be hot again, but for now I’m savoring this taste of early fall vibes.
With so much rain in such a short amount of time, things are very soggy around here. Standing water in all the low spots. A small “stream” going down the driveway. Tiny frogs appearing everywhere. The walk to the garden is squish-squish-squish at every step. The ground is very, very saturated. Just when things start to dry out a little, we get another rainy day.
The garden is absolutely loving the water, the chickens not so much. And I have been making use of the rainy days to stretch my hibernation muscles, in preparation for the cozy season not so far away. There have been books read, an afghan for Mr. finished, new recipes tested {and devoured}, and many cups of hot tea and/or coffee sipped. It’s been a nice slower paced resting moment after the hustle and busyness of the peak Summer garden season.
Hard to see here, but Pippin stares out of the box’s window as if she’s pouting.
“Pattern” made up as I went along, but very pleased with the result.
What do you do when there’s a prolonged stretch of rainy days?
We had a few cool, lovely, rainy days early in the month but now we are in the 90s again and it looks like the heat will hang out for the next several days 😦 I can’t wait for fall!

Oh yikes! I’m hoping we have seen the last of the 90s (but not holding my breath) – so far the warmup is staying in the mid80s, but nights are back in the 70s and you can tell. So very ready for fall here too!

What a gorgeous afghan!
Would you please send some rain our way. Yikes. Nova Scotia hasn’t had any “real” rain since June and things are pretty dire here. Farmers are struggling, everything is on high alert for forest fire risk (they’ve shut down access to any wooded trails in our province – it made BBC news today). There is a chance of some showers tomorrow, but we need days of steady rain!
With two kids a prolonged stretch of rain drives me crazy. But when I was younger, I used it as an excuse to sit inside and read 😉

It has rained so much here that I have not had to water my lawn all year. I do like the savings on my water bill but am wondering if God is trying to tell us something. Such lovely slow days. The afghan turned out beautifully.

I bet it has been nice not having to water: we are thoroughly appreciating the reprieve from the hour+ garden watering every night. Thank you, I am pleased with it (and so is Mr!) 🩷

Sounds like you’ve had a major change weather wise. I’m not surprised the chickens are unimpressed after all that sun. Although I imagine they appreciate the abundance of worms that appear afterwards. Your ‘hibernation’ time sounds wonderful and the afghan you’ve made looks lovely. Rainy days are always a wonderful excuse to curl up with a book or craft project.

The sun came back today, and the chickies have been sunbathing 😂 they will be extra happy once we mow their fence line and they get fresh “hay” to scratch in 🙂
