Six more weeks?

As today is the Autumnal Equinox, and Hobbit Day, it feels so fitting to be making this post. Cozy season is creeping closer and closer, and as wonderful as Summer was, I’m ready for the Fall. There is something special about the “in-between seasons,” with Fall especially refreshing my soul.

Last year, we learned about the folkloric tradition of predicting the first frost by when the goldenrod blooms. The estimate was a bit off last year {it frosted earlier!}, but we also weren’t sure if we’d caught the goldenrod at the right time or not. This year, we’ve been monitoring it closely, and as soon as the bulk of the goldenrod burst into bloom we took note.

If calculations and folklore are correct, our first frost should be around Halloween. Which, weirdly enough, is when we penciled in the potential first frost last year. So we shall see what happens.

For those more familiar with persimmon seed predictions, fear not: we have seeds and plan to cut into them and see what they forecast soon!

I will say it looks like Fall. The poplars started turning gold the end of July, like clockwork, and more dustings of color are appearing in the woods. The maples are starting to dance. The goldenrod and wild asters are a riot of purple and gold along the roadsides. The sky has that deeper blue that it only seems to get in the Fall.

The seasons are doing their thing, and it is such a beautiful reminder that even in the tough times, Life goes on and there’s a new day – with new experiences and wonders – ahead.

  3. To me, fall starts when the kids go back to school. Regardless of the weather, I consider it to be autumn that very day. My husband LOVES summer and is always grumpy when I try to say it’s fall long before the equinox.

    Where we live the leaves are juuuust starting to turn. We’ve had a frost warning and the mornings are chilly, but the afternoons are hot, sunny, and beautiful. It’s my absolute favourite time of year!

    • School starting back does make for a very “fall” feeling 🙂 Mr and I both love Fall, so we’ve been eagerly watching for the season to shift. No frost warnings yet, but the nights are getting close to crisp feeling!

  4. I have never heard of the persimmon or goldenrod predictions! The only weather predictor I have heard of is the wooly bear, and I am forgetting the details. Something about the size of its brown stripe correlating to the length of winter? I don’t remember, but I do love spotting wooly bears on my walks!

    • Yes! We keep our eyes open for the wooly bear/worms too, but it’s harder to tell what they’re predicting. Especially when we end up with random white ones sometimes! They’re super cute regardless 🙂
