It finally snowed

After dodging the ice storm bullet last Sunday (1/25), we had a few days to sort-of-thaw before it was time for another weather event. This time, everything lined up just right and we actually got A Snow. And when I saw snow, I mean snow: it snowed all day Saturday, during the day, so we were able to watch, and it was falling with gusto. Weather reports stated we were in a patch that was seeing 1+ inch snowfall per hour. I definitely believe it too: there were times it was so snowy I could not see the trees across the road. Not to mention watching our tracks going to the chicken pen disappear. It was also extremely cold, which made nervous chicken momma a little extra nervous. {They are fine. Grumpy about not being able to get out and scratch around in the sunshine, but fine. Yay! They are some tough little chickies.} Saturday our temperatures hovered in the 18-20* range all day, with the wind howling like a banshee. That’s the kind of cold that hurts, but it also made Sunday’s 31* and sun feel like a balmy day!

Okay, that’s enough chatter. I know what you’re really curious about is the photographs I managed to get during this event. Saturday’s were primarily taken through the window(s), because #ExtremelyPainfullyCold. But Sunday we did manage to get out and explore a little bit, as you’ll see. This is a very photo-heavy post, but I think we can all appreciate snowy wonderlands.

Doing a chicken check before it got bad Saturday.
Pecan said “we’ll just stay in here, thanks.”

The WoBirdy feeder got a lot of use and captured some very cute snowy images. The birds were so perplexed when it was full of snow Sunday morning.

The chickens made it through, but said they were going to stay inside their box until further notice. So much snow blew into their covered space, I crawled in and hung feeder bowls on the wire where they could reach from the ramp. Or the box itself, as Popcorn demonstrates. They might be spoiled.

It was very cold Sunday morning, with single digit windchills. It was well into the afternoon before we ventured into the woods. Kind of sad when 30* feels warm!

The amount of animal trails everywhere was amazing.
The snow was so sparkly in the sun.
Such a soft, clinging snow, turning the woods into a storybook forest.
It was so windy! The snow was blowing like sand.
It also made it very hard to measure, and kept filling in our tracks.
Our growbags are under there somewhere.
A small gap opened in the pansy plastic.
The plants looked okay, and what a cute little snow-bloom.

The chickens were feeling braver too, with my tiny little Pepper girl being the first to pop “outside.” She drank some fresh water and surveyed the snowy world. Her verdict: not impressed.

To complete the Winter Wonderland experience, February’s full Snow Moon made the night shine. Between the snow and the full moon, it was so bright.

We ended up with a solid 8-10 inches of fluffy snow. It’s hard to get an exact measure because there was so much windblow and drifts. While walking, especially in open areas, the snow was coming well above my boots in places, so I’m leaning toward the 10-inch end of the spectrum. It’s beautiful. It’s cold. It may be around awhile.

Did you see snow this weekend? I know this system was bringing snow to areas that don’t usually see it. My family in Florida even had a few flurries!
Hope you’re all staying safe and warm!

    • Thanks! I love the pictures I’m able to get with the bird feeder 😀 And it’s so much fun to log in to the live feed and watch the birds.
The coop did get a little “winterizing”: it took 3 separate trips to 2 different farm stores to get straw bales to make a small windbreak wall + I shifted the coop’s position under the tarp to try and give them the biggest “clear space” to come outside. I also added lots of extra shavings inside, to help block any potential drafts + be cozier. Unfortunately the snow blew like crazy so the strawbales didn’t block quite like I hoped (although I’m sure it did help with the wind itself). If they start forecasting more, I may have to get a few more bales and bulk it up a bit.

    • Thank you! ❤ I love watching snow fall, so I was so happy it snowed during the day instead of overnight 🙂 I admit, I was very pleased with myself getting the sparkle to come through 😀 It's just so gorgeous: sun + snow + startling blue skies + pine greens … Beautiful. Almost makes the cold worth it 😉

  1. Yay im glad you got some snow like you were hoping although I’m sorry to hear how extremely cold its been for you too. Those bird pictures are so sweet, I especially love the icy beak one but feel for the poor thing. Guessing what all the animal tracks belong to must be pretty fun too. And I love how sparkly the snow is in one of these pictures 😍 although they’re all lovely.

We’ve had rain. And icy wind. I’m very fed up of muddy dog walks. Somehow I always end up flicking it up my leggings 🙈

    • The snow has been SO beautiful that it almost makes the cold bearable. Almost 😉
The animal tracks keep multiplying! Every morning when I go out to take [melted] water to the chickens, I find new tracks and trails. At least one rabbit even made it into the chicken fence last night, LOL! It’s fascinating, and very interesting to follow the trails and see where they came from and what they do. A possum also appeared and wandered around last night, thankfully staying away from the chickens!
I am very pleased with the sparkly picture, I gotta admit 😀 It was so bright outside I wasn’t sure if it’d worked or not until I got back in the house.
Rain and icy wind is the worst, ugh … and cold mud. Cold mud is disgusting. I hate the way it flicks up on pants. Hopefully things will dry out for you! ❤

      • Wow it sounds fascinating to witness. Although having seen the latter in an episode of House I’m glad it didnt get into the chickens as it did not seem remotely friendly.
Ive noticed that wearing wellies makes the mud thing worse. For some reason it never flicks up as badly in walking boots 🤔

        • I was very glad the possum had stayed away from the chickens too! The “agreement” in place is that if the wild things stay away from the chickens, they can stay. Otherwise … removal will happen, lol
