The FJIG Collective, Week 3

Catch up on previous weeks of FJIGgy moments here: Week 1 and Week 2. Also, you can catch the community recap of Week 2 over on Elisabeth’s blog, for more joyful moments.

February 15th: Despite recent snow/ice events, we are in desperate need of rain. The almost-2-inches that fell were very needed {even if the chickens did get very grumpy about it all}.
February 16th: The first real day of work in the Garden! Yay! To celebrate, we made the most amazing steak lunch, loosely based on this recipe.
February 17th: Pepper laid her first egg since Halloween! Between going broody and the second hawk attack, she’s taken a nice {deserved} break. Meanwhile Penguin has still only laid one egg, and Pippin decided to go on strike after the snow. Hens, man … what can you do with them?
Bonus FJIG: There are no words to describe what it’s like being loved by a tiny rooster.
February 18th: The first daffodil bloom! What a cheerful highlight on a very blustery and grey day.
February 19th: Discovered the chickens have a pet: a very large bunny appears to be making a nest under the grapevine behind the chicken pen. Bunny is completely unbothered by me being mere feet away inside the pen.
February 20th: A noneventful trip to the dentist for a cleaning, with no follow-ups required.
February 21st: Gathered all the blooming daffodils ahead of 24* overnight lows, and found a Pippin egg in the nesting box. My big fluffy girl is off strike!

During her 3+ month hiatus, I almost forgot how tiny Pepper eggs are!
Sunshine on a cloudy day.
I now have a small vase full of them on my table.

I feel like I should also point out that while I haven’t listed it daily this week, the Olympics continue to be a major highlight. Also the internet memes/shared tweets about the Olympics. The fact that so many of us, around the world, are thoroughly enjoying the chaos and delight and enthusiasm. This year has been pure gold on so many levels, and I love it. {I may have to do a Tea Time chat about the Olympics, and my lifelong love of them…}

What glimmers of JOY have you found this week?

  1. I am legitimately sad to think about waking up tomorrow and not watching the Olympics over breakfast. It has been so much fun for the whole family. I want to make more of an effort to tune in to the Paralympics this time!

Daffodils are so pretty. We are a long way from spring in my part of the world. The ground is still covered in snow and we’re getting a major snow storm tomorrow/in to Tuesday. I’m expecting the kids to have two MORE snow days.

    • I know, it’s so sad to think they’re over! I did subscribe to Peacock premium for the month, so I can go back and watch some replay/recorded footage of some of the bits I missed here and there šŸ˜‰ LOL

As beautiful as the snow was while it was here, and as much as I’ve learned to lean into wintering, I cannot fathom such a permanent snow cover with more to come!
I am very excited for daffodil season this year, because we planted several bags of mixed bulbs we got on end-of-season clearance, and I’ve no idea what will bloom! I’m hoping for some pink ones.

    • Oh yay! ā¤
It really is cute – I'm hoping to get a picture or video of them standing at the fence watching "their" bunny šŸ™‚ Penguin especially is all about it, but then her life motto is "eat snacks and make friends" šŸ˜‰

    • There are even daffodils randomly popping up on the backside of the chicken pen! The chickens have flowers too! LOL! {They are outside of their fence, but it’s fun to say šŸ˜‰ } It’s a quirky little patch we call home šŸ™‚

  2. Ha… I love the names of your chickens. And, a bunny!!! Hilarious to think of it as the chickens’ pet.

I’m so sad the Olympics are over! For some weird reason I was thinking I didn’t like the winter Olympics as much as summer… was I insane? I loved every second! I’m so bummed we have to wait another four years.

    • I had a lot of fun coming up with unconventional chicken names šŸ˜‰ hehe

This Olympiad reminded me of all the reasons the Winter Games are my favorite šŸ˜€ And yeah, totally sad we have to wait 4 whole years for the next one!

  3. Must be exciting to have a few eggs appear again. Does the weather affect laying at all? šŸ¤” the rabbit appearance sounds very cute too. You get so much wildlife by you šŸ˜ glad you enjoyed the Olympics so much too. I really should make more of an effort to watch them. The bits and pieces I see always seem so fascinating. Although I must confess that seeing a stance labeled as ‘goofy’ threw me šŸ˜‚

    • Officially, it’s daylight hours that determine whether eggs are laid or not. So in the winter, when there’s less daylight, they naturally slow down and “slack off.” {This was their first winter, so Pippin actually kept laying pretty good – but that only ever happens for the first winter. You can force them to lay all winter by having lights in the coop, but if they need a break, they need a break. We all do, in winter.} I do think the extreme cold + snowy spell + spending so much time inside the coop made her take a little break, but she’s back at it now! šŸ™‚
The wildlife level here is insane!
Snowboarding’s entire vocabulary is a wild ride šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

      • That makes a lot of sense, and I totally agree that they need a break from time to time. Im sure they’ll love getting outside more as the weather continues improving though 🄰🄰
