February Feasts

When the weather is cold and dubious, there is something extra comforting about delicious food. We enjoyed some very good meals during the month of February, including a “foodie road trip” to try a place we saw recommended on YouTube. Before we get to the photos and run down of feasts enjoyed at home, here’s the video recap of our Valentine’s foodie adventure:

It may not be our new favorite restaurant, but it was a fun adventure – and if we found ourselves in Mt Airy and needing lunch, we’d visit again. So often the places we see featured on YouTube are much further afield, so to find one within reach was a nice surprise.

Now, to the highlights of our cooking and feasting at home …

A four-cheese pizza with green onions.
Perfect snow day food.

I’m thoroughly enjoying our NutriMill, and starting to experiment with using fresh milled flours in my regular recipes. My go-to pizza dough is extra delicious when made with half-bread flour and half-fresh milled flour. The next time, I may go ahead and try all fresh milled flour.

Nothing is as cozy as split pea soup,
this bowl with some pan-seared kielbasa added.
Mr has perfected his guacamole process.
Burrito pan “bakes” are our new favorite thing.

Quality ingredients definitely impact your food. We buy organic, grass-fed {and grass-finished} ground beef for all of our taco/burrito/chili/etc. and you can really taste the goodness.

Testing a new recipe for parmesan herb potato wedges.
Ingredients for an amazing pan sauce.
The steak to go with the pan sauce.
The finished product: the best steak ever.

Not only do ingredients matter, but the way you mix and cook them also impacts the end result. We have been watching some excellent cooking videos and are slowly adding more epic feasting elements to our arsenal. Learning new techniques is such a fun {delicious} process.

As always: we eat a lot of salads.
Sometimes with homemade croutons!
Another pizza: rotisserie chicken + arugula; balsamic drizzle on Mr’s half.

Sometimes I’m the one cooking, sometimes Mr is at the helm, but a lot of times – especially when we’re trying something new – we are cooking together. It’s a true team effort, and contributes to our enjoyment of the meal.

We are looking forward to eating from the garden again, and I’m already salivating over the idea of fresh tomatoes and cucumbers. There are also many pastas we want to make, and more things to try with the fresh milled flour.

You have to eat to survive, so you might as well eat things that are delicious, fulfilling {nutritionally and tasty}, and beautiful to look at. Of course, we also hit up Chick-fil-A and Domino’s on the regular, but on the whole: nothing tastes like homemade, and we’re trying to be ever more intentional about eating good.

  1. Looks like a lovely trip and also like you made lots of great meals in February. I love that you cook together, such a lovely experience 🥰 the pizzas and steak look lovely (well everything does tbh). Slimming Eats has some fantastic recipes. Smothered garlic chicken is one of my favourites.

    • Smothered garlic chicken sounds delicious! Will have to look that one up 😀
We have fun cooking together, although I am all about a recipe and Mr is more “let’s just try this and see” 😂

    • I actually made chili last night … as it hit 80 today 😂

Guac: avocado, garlic, a lot of lime juice, salt. Mr mashes the garlic + salt together first until it’s as smooth as he can get it, then adds the avocado + lime juice. Super basic, super delicious. 😀

    • Sometimes the simplest cooking generates the best food! 🙂 While we’re starting to try some fancier techniques, most of our cooking is fairly “rustic”.
