Book Blanket 2025

After a year’s worth of reading and creating Granny squares, then doing the math to make a functional blanket and joining all the squares together, Book Blanket 2025 is officially finished. And I am so very pleased with the way it turned out!

On one of the update posts last year, Jean mentioned how neat it would be to see all the book covers laid out to compare with the blanket and, drumroll please, I managed to make that happen. Since book covers are rectangles and I made squares, at first the visuals seem mismatched, but you should be able to get a general idea of how the covers translated into crochet. {As always with image galleries, you can click on the individual image to see them full-size.}

Because I am so in love with the way this turned out, here are a handful of detail shots showing off some of my favorites. And for the curious, I can identify most of the squares accurately, but I do have to stop and think {or even consult my own social media} about some of them.

The colors worked together surprisingly well, for it to be such a random process. The dark turquoise border really helped bring everything into a cohesive blanket, which is what I hoped. I can also confirm that it is the perfect size and weight for reading on the couch.

As mentioned, my Book Blanket 2026 is going to be something completely different. In another month or so, when I’ve got more examples to play with, I may try and share a “teaser” for what I see in my head. Until then, I’m already brainstorming my next crochet project(s) …

  1. I was so excited when I saw the title of this post in my email I had to rush right over and have a look 🙂 The blanket is beautiful and a lovely representation of your last year’s reading! I would love to make something like this but I can only do the basic single crochet. I made some prayer squares for my ladies Bible study this month. The one I used as a model had crosses in the center made from a bobble stitch. I watched several tutorials on you tube but just could not catch on, lol. You did an amazing job with your blanket and I’m excited to see what you come up with for this year’s book blanket 🙂

    • Oh yay, I love that you were excited 😀 Thank you so much 🥰
      Granny squares are really just double crochets, but you could probably make single crochet squares with different colors, it just might need more rounds than 5 🙂
      I want to figure out a bobble stitch! It escapes me at the moment, but I am determined!

  2. Wow, Rebecca, this is so amazing! I love your book blanket so much! It’s great that you got the photos of the book covers and the squares, and I can absolutely tell that they go together. I love how the dark turquoise border brings it all together – plus that’s one of my favorite colors. I can just imagine you snuggled under this blanket reading a good book!

    • Thank you so much 🥰🥰🥰 I fell in love with that dark turquoise at the store and needed a way to use it – when I realized I would need a border to bring it all together cohesively, bingo! 😀 The whole process was so much fun, and now that it’s finished and usable it’s fun on a whole other level 😉

    • Thank you! 🥰 It photographs in a way you can’t tell the places where I muddled my way through to make it work 😉 LOL! Definitely a learning curve/experience, but I am glad it worked out and I do feel more confident now with my crochet. It’s one of those things you have to just dive into and keep practicing and it’ll eventually get there 🙂 And oh yeah, that turquoise gives me so much joy.

  5. Wow! This is such a brilliant idea. I had never heard of a crocheted book blanket before seeing this post but just love the idea. Granny squares are just about the only thing that I can do in crochet so I might give this a try.

    • Thank you! ❤ You should definitely give it a try! It was such a rewarding process, and fun too! Picking colors to match the book, getting creative on some of them … I feel much more confident in my crochet skills now too. 🙂

  6. Yesss the teal edges are perfect to bring everything together and oh wow it came together so well! I think I may have missed if you explained somewhere what the the solid teal granny squares mean. Are those when you dnf’d something or used to fill out the exact amount needed for the blanket?
    Congrats on finishing such an awesome project! 🙂

    • Thank you! 🥰:D
      I needed more squares to fill out the blanket at a size that worked (82 squares does not divide well, or at all 😂), so I had to find places to put 8 squares … I decided to do one at the beginning and end, and then at the end of every 2 months. I could have just done a solid row or etc, but I liked the mixing it in like that. 🙂
