Before we begin: this post is not about Alice in Wonderland.
Have you ever picked up a book that reminded you of another book, which led to another book, and sent you down a rabbit trail of books? That experience prompted the creation of this feature. As an avid reader, this has happened to me more than once, most recently while reading a NetGalley of Marie Benedict’s new release Daughter of Egypt.
As I started reading, I had a moment of I think I’ve read about this before… After checking my goodreads, I discovered I have read about Lady Evelyn/Eve before, in The Collector’s Daughter. The two novels approach the same string of events from different perspectives, and I loved that Benedict’s included alternating POV chapters from Hatshepsut.
While in the depths of goodreads, I remembered other books I’d tagged as TBR with a similar theme, and voila: a ready-made reading list!

- Daughter of Egypt (Marie Benedict) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
- The Collector’s Daughter (Gill Paul) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
- The Stolen Queen (Fiona Davis)
- The Woman Who Would be King (Kara Cooney)
- When Women Ruled the World (Kara Cooney)
- Women in the Valley of the Kings (Kathleen Sheppard)
- The Earl and the Pharoah (the Countess of Carnarvon)
- A World Beneath the Sands (Toby Wilkinson)
Fun story: when I was very little, we went to the Ramsses the Great exhibition at the Mint Museum, and despite my young age, I remember glimpses of the artifacts on display. Many years later, Mr and I were able to see the Golden Mummies of Egypt at the NC Museum of Art. With these personal experiences, and my studies in History and Art History, is it any wonder I’ve compiled such a list of books? Now that I’ve been reminded of the treasures awaiting {pun intended}, I hope to make progress moving them from TBR to Read.
Have you read these or any other books – fiction or nonfiction – about Egyptian archaeology?
Have you ever been to an Ancient Egypt exhibition?
