A foodie adventure

On our recent getaway, Mr and I realized that eating is one of the big attractions of traveling for us. When planning our trip, we made 2 lists: one of things we wanted to do, and the other of places we wanted to eat. I’ve shared the recap of what we did, now it’s time to share what we ate.

Friends, you may want to have a snack handy while reading this post.

At the top of the list was the White Chicken Pizza from Angelo’s in Waynesville. I fell in love with this pizza in 2017, when a girlfriend and I were in desperate search of food after an afternoon of garden wandering at Biltmore. It’s a hard thing when your favorite pizza is only available on vacation, but it also makes it so much more special when you are able to indulge. The last time I tasted the goodness was on our mini-moon, when I was able to introduce Mr to all my favorite mountain spots. I am happy to confirm: it is still delicious.

While looking at foodie destinations in Asheville, we stumbled upon White Duck Taco {and later remembered seeing the Hendersonville location last year}. It was a great lunch choice after a morning spent e-biking around the city.

In addition to our pizza quest, we are always looking for good burgers as well. After a morning of wandering around downtown, we decided to try Burgerworx. That delicious lunch featured my first smashburger, and the best sweet potato fries I’ve ever eaten in my life.

Of course, we had to find sweet treats: visiting OWL Bakery and two separate chocolate shops. French Broad Chocolate has been a tradition since we were dating, so they were a must. Then on the way to Malaprops {the bookstore}, we discovered another chocolate shop! I somehow failed to get pictures of our Chocolate Fetish treats, but let’s just say their Parisian Tea bar was stunning.

There were also trips to Starbucks {if you have not tried the Toasted Coconut Cream Cold Brew, you need to – I don’t even like cold coffee, but this is a new favorite}, and the Chick-fil-A {sometimes you need a familiar salad option}.

Our final day, we swung down to Brevard and oh my goodness. Y’all. The food. Our first stop was Bracken Mountain Bakery, because multiple people online mentioned them selling out early. These pastries were beyond amazing, even eating them “late”/after being in the car several hours.

And then, then we stumbled upon the new best pizza ever. Pisgah Bakehouse was jamming, and we got lucky to find a parking place, but I totally understand why. We were on a pizza-mission, but there was so much on the menu that looked good. Judging from the pizza, I’d say it’s probably all amazing. They also had a counter full of pastries and baked delights, but we’d just purchased our Bracken Mountain goodies. {Sounds like we will just have to go back!}

While we joked about traveling just to eat, you have to eat so might as well make it a fun experience. Our official rankings are:

Best Pizza: Pisgah Bakehouse
Best Bakery: Bracken Mountain Bakery
Best Chocolate: We have to go back and try again! *We got different items at both places, making it nearly impossible to rank/compare fairly.

Do you make a list of foodie destinations when you travel?
Do you have a go-to food that you always look for in a new location?
What is your favorite bakery item/pastry?

  1. Finding lovely places to eat out is one of my favourie things to do on holiday. Some times we look at the reviews and try places that are highly rated (if we can afford them) but other times it’s just lovely to wantder around in the evening and try somewhere that just looks nice.

    • Yes! While we obviously hit up some familiar chains, we try to mainly eat food we can’t get at home. And have discovered some of the best local spots that way 😀

  2. We always look for a local good pizza place! It is our tradition as well. Lol. We have done this since we started traveling together a million years ago. I think our favorites have been in Savannah, GA and then the cornbread crust pizza in Mackinaw City. That one was so cool but the original building burned down and the new version is awful. 😦

It looks like you guys found some great places!! Those pastries look amazing. And the tacos!!

    • Yay for fellow pizza hunters! 😀

The pastries were so good, especially from the one in Brevard. It was my first Bear Claw, and I may be ruined for any other, haha

  3. All of the food you’ve tried out looks lovely. Those two pizzas look divine. Is the white chicken one on a whiee base? Because I love those but they seem so rare. They used to do a chicken kiev one in a shop near me but I only got to have it the one time then they stopped selling it 😭 those pasties look amazing too. I’ve heard of a Bear Claw so many times but never really seen one as I don’t think they do them over here. The coffee sounds lovely too. My go to has been a pistachio one like that but they’ve stopped doing it in all but one store which had bulk ordered the flavouring. Luckily its the closest to us 😅 but I’ll have to try the coconut cream one too. Your chocolate traditional sounds lovely as well. Definitely looks like you had some great food discoveries.

    • Yes, the white chicken is on a white base 😀 I love a white-base pizza, and they are a little hard to find. {I have discovered one of our local Italian places has a good one too – I just have them swap the broccoli for chicken, LOL}. It was my first Bear Claw, and I’m afraid I may be ruined for others now, it was just so very good. Definitely try the coconut coffee! I am not a fan of cold coffee at all, but this one is just so good.

      • I don’t know why they seem so rare as they taste divine. Then again you never get as many barbecue ones as I think you should either. I hope you get to return to the bakery sometime then 🥰 and I’ll let you know how I find the coffee.
