Sometimes you need a good old fashioned “odds & ends” post, gather all the little bits and make a decent-sized post of them. This is one of those times, and today we cover a range of fallish things.
As mentioned in my midmonth walking check-in, my parents shared some of their abundant grape harvest. We decided to can some grape juice, using a recipe Mr’s grandfather used to make. The juice apparently gets better the longer it sits, so we’ve got our jars stashed away and plan to crack into one around Christmas. This is completely new to me, but I’m looking forward to trying the finished product!

We also got a fresh batch of kraut percolating. You can read more about our process in this post.

Fall lettuce has been started {and has since sprouted!}, and the experimental radishes and carrots are growing surprisingly well! They are also delicious.

Everyone has been posting their Fall reading list, and after posting a very ambitious list last year, I’ve scaled things back a little. This year I’m really feeling the pull toward fallish books, and I’ve got even more on my Kindle {they just don’t photograph as well}. Hopefully these will get knocked out as a nice balance to the Christmas reading that’s starting to show up.

Is there any question that Fall sunsets are the most gorgeous ever? As beautiful as this is, it doesn’t even do justice to the depth and brilliancy of the colors in the moment. The whole sky was glowing.

The bumblebees are still out, gobbling up all the goodness they can before the cold arrives.

And finally, after some false starts and misfires, the persimmon seeds have been consulted! I don’t think I had quite the right knife for the job, so the insides took a bit of a beating, but you can still see an abundance of spoons. If the folklore is correct, that means we’re in for a snowy winter! It also looks like there’s a knife in there too, which foretells sharp cold/wind that cuts like a knife. That part is less fun than the snow.

Our mornings are getting crispy, but we’re still waiting on that first frost; the goldenrod said Halloween, so we’ve got a little time yet. It is certainly beginning to look more like Fall here, and I am savoring every minute.
How is your Fall going? Have you made a Fall TBR? Did you consult any persimmon seeds?
I have never consulted persimmon seeds! I can actually say that I’ve never had a persimmon in my posession! What a beautiful sunset. The sunrises have also been beautiful. I love fall so much!

Spoiler alert: getting the persimmon seeds out of the persimmons is sticky but also slimy work, lol… A lot of people use the persimmons to make a fruit pulp that becomes persimmon pudding, but I am not a fan. I’ll stick to chopping the seeds in half to prognosticate 😉
We don’t see sunrises as well, because there’s a line of woods on the other side of the cow pasture/to the East. But our Western sky is wide open and glorious – I will miss that view one day, but until then I soak it in ❤
Yes, yes, yes! The older I get, the more I love fall 😀

I didn’t know about the persimmons seeds but my late grandmother could read tea cups with excellent accuracy! Thanks for sharing your odds and ends!
