Washington DC: Day 2

Don’t miss: Day 1

Apparently we have a tradition of visiting historical sites for our anniversary: Colonial Williamsburg/Jamestown/Yorktown in 2023, Monticello last year, and Mount Vernon {as well as Washington DC in general} this year. When planning our trip, Mount Vernon was one of the top priorities, and it did not disappoint. As beautiful as Monticello is, Mount Vernon is right up there too: the way the house sits on the Potomac River? I loved it! After spending the morning wandering the grounds and touring the mansion, we found our way back into DC proper and did a lot of walking. We tried to see the White House, but large swathes of the surrounding area were blocked off. We ended up walking around half the Mall, doing the War memorial loop, in heavy drizzle.

We stayed on King Street in Alexandria, and it had so much personality.

George Washington’s Mount Vernon

We were greeted by the Washingtons on our arrival at Mount Vernon.
The house has the most gorgeous setting, with the river behind.
We will always explore the gardens.
This tree dates back to Washington’s time!
Heritage breed sheep will always catch our eye as well.
The Mansion, as seen from the river landing/wharf.
Martha Washington’s quilt.
The education center was impressive.

Washington DC + the National Mall

There were so many great buildings.
Another perspective of the Washington Monument.
Our best glimpse of the White House was across the street from the parking entrance.
From the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.
The scale of this monument is unreal.
Thomas Jefferson’s Memorial, as seen from the Mall.

The day ended with a standing-room-only Metro ride back to Alexandria, on a train filled with NFL fans leaving the game. {Note to self: check NFL schedules in the future}.

Day 2 Walking: 8.8 miles
Total/Trip Walking: 14.5 miles

Have you been to Monticello and/or Mount Vernon?
If so, which is your favorite? I honestly can’t decide!
